It occured to me while watching TV over the last few days that there are commericals you just don’t see during broadcasts in the Philippines. You don’t see ads for cars. I realized this when it occured to me that I was watching one of those, “Zero down. Zero percent. Zero et cetera” segments at the end of a car commercial yesterday. It was the first one I had seen in 11 weeks.
This led me to make a list:
You don’t see ads for weight loss programs in the Philippines.
You don’t see ads for tanning salons.
You don’t see ads for reality shows about housewives in the OC.
You don’t see ads for life insurance.
You don’t see ads for smoking cessation programs.
You do see ads for medicines.
You do see ads for skin whiteners.
You do see ads for rodent/bug elimination sprays.
You do see ads for basketball games.
You do see ads for cleaning products.
David Letterman of late night television fame once said, “If you want to learn about a society put down the goddamn newspaper and look through the yellow pages.” I think it applies.
